File Manager

The File Manager is a utility that will allow you to perform numerous tasks on files and directories on your account. You can upload files with this utility, as well as edit and change permissions on files. Most of the options available in the File Manager are self-explanatory. Because of the number of options available to you, I will not be going over all of them. If you have any questions or comments on a particular item not listed here, feel free to contact us.

The first thing you will notice when you click the File Manager link, are the two links that say Create New Folder and Upload Files(s). These two links will function just as they describe and are available in every directory that you will navigate through.

To navigate through the File Manager, click on the folder icon beside the folder name. This will change the current directory that is being display, into that directory. This is how you will navigate through directories. Clicking on a directory name, will change the right frame and give you a list of operations you can perform on that directory.

One of the operations you can perform is to change permissions. This can be useful if you have upload a CGI script or need to change the permissions on a particular directory or file.

You can see a list of checkboxes and a row of textboxes. You can use either method to change the permission of the directory or file. The two methods are dynamically linked, so that when one changes the other will be updated. For a CGI script, the common permission setting is 755. You will hear this be called several different things, permission setting, chmod'ing, etc. Most of the files and directories that you create will not need to be changed. This option is useful to users who are using CGI scripts or need a directory's permission changed.

Another useful operation available to users through the control panel, is the ability to edit files. Simply locate the file you wish to edit and click on the file name.

Click on Edit File and another window will open up. This will contain a textarea that will display the contents of that file. From this window you can make changes to the file. Scrolling down you can click on the Save to save the changed contents of the file. The file has now been updated on the server and does not require you to do any uploading. This is useful if you just need to make a quick change on a file, rather than go through the hassle of reuploading the file. However, do note that the changes made will not affect the copy on your local hard drive. If you want the two files to stay the same, you will need to make the same adjustments on your local copy.

The other options available in the File Manager should be relatively easy to figure out. If you have any questions about any of the options available, feel free to contact us.
