SubDomains

Subdomains are a unique method of allowing you to split up your site, to allow other, seperate sub sites. You cannot specify a quota limit or a bandwidth limit on your subdomains. They are all clustered together with your main account. For example, if you have a 200MB account, and you place 150MB of files into a subdomain, you will have 50MB to distribute among your main site or other subdomains.

When you click on the Sub-Domains link in your Control Panel, you will see a page similiar to:

You will notice that there are four options available to you: To create a subdomain, enter the name of the subdomain in the text box. For example if your domain is amsnac2.com and you want to create a scott.amsnac2.com subdomain, enter the word scott in the textbox.

Note: If you want to create a subdomain and have FTP access to this subdomain, the subdomain name, and the FTP username need to be the same. For information on setting up an FTP user click here.

After you click add, a message should be displayed saying your subdomain has been created. You can now test your subdomain by opening your browser to subdomain.domain.com where subdomain is the subdomain you just added and domain.com is your domain name.

You can now FTP into your account and click on the public_html directory. You should see a new folder that is the same name as the subdomain you just created. This is where you will want to upload files so they are accessible at your subdomain. Be sure to upload an index.html or index.php file in that directory, so that it will show by default.

Notice: Accessing a subdomain at http://subdomain.domain.com is the same as accessing it at http://domain.com/subdomain/. Now that you have a subdomain create, you can also create a redirect. What this does is redirect traffic so that when a visitor goes to a subdomain, they get redirected elsewhere.

Note: This step is not required to have your subdomain functioning correctly. If you have completed the above steps, you have successfully created a subdomain. A redirect is simply an additional feature, that may be useful for some users.

For example, if you have the subdomain scott.amsnac2.com and you want to redirect it to http://slashdot.org. Simply enter http://slashdot.org in the textbox.

Clicking Save will save the redirect. Now going to scott.amsnac2.com will take you to http://slashdot.org.i

The two other options available, allow you to Remove a redirection on a subdomain and allow you to delete a subdomain entirely.
